Vera fans 'gutted' and predicting tears ahead of final ever episode

ITV crime drama Vera aired its penultimate episode on New Year’s Day and, ahead of the finale, fans are already mourning the Brenda Blethyn-fronted TV show. There was a new mystery for Vera to solve, but viewers were emotional about the fact they have to say goodbye to the telly detective in the next 24 hours.

Vera first aired way back in 2011 and 56 episodes have been released since then, providing plenty of crimes for Blethyn’s sleuth to investigate. Before we even had the “cosy crime” genre as a buzzword, Vera was flying the flag.

The penultimate episode of Vera followed the title character as she delved into a cold case, which had recently been opened again. A man convicted of killing his wife had his verdict overturned, which meant there might still be a murderer out there.

Viewers were vocal about their enjoyment of the episode, but their attention quickly turned to the fact they would soon have to say goodbye to Brenda Blethyn and the show. “Gutted that this is the last Vera. Loved the books and loved the series. Consoling myself there’s one more episode tomorrow,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Another viewer had an emotional prediction for the finale, saying: “Genuinely think that I’m gunna be in tears after tomorrow night’s finale.” That sentiment was echoed by another fan on BlueSky, who wrote: “Can’t mentally prepare myself to watch the last Vera cos I don’t want it to be over.”

Other fans shared their memories from the show’s 14-year run, with one viewer writing on X that Vera is their “go to show to watch when I’ve had rough days over the years”.

Meanwhile, on BlueSky, another fan looked to the future in a reply to a post by original Vera author Ann Cleeves. They wrote: “I am sad to see the show end. There could be no other Vera but if you keep writing her stories and someone tries to fill Brenda’s shoes, I’ll watch. I hope you keep writing great stories for many years to come. You are one of the best if not THE best of your genre.”

Some viewers were thrilled to learn that they could actually already watch the final episode on ITV’s streaming service ITVX. However, at least one fan wasn’t so pleased, writing: “I cannot believe ITV have disrespected Vera by putting the finale on ITVX already this morning.”

The penultimate Vera episode saw her offered a promotion and, therefore, a chance to spend more time behind a desk and less out in the field. She certainly faced danger this time around as the episode concluded with a dramatic encounter on a clifftop, in which somebody fell to their death. Fortunately for viewers, and despite the attentions of a crook, that wasn’t Vera.

For her final case, the official synopsis reads: “A missing girl and a student killed and dumped at the foot of three mythical monoliths set Vera on an investigation that triggers memories from her own childhood.”

The final episode of Vera airs on ITV1 at 8pm on 2 January 2025. It is already available to stream on ITVX.
