Usually when we see someone get carjacked through a strongarm approach and there’s a weapon involved, it’s a firearm. Sometimes that weapon isn’t even lethal (like a BB gun), but just the threat is enough to get victims to cave. But a case involving US Customs and Border Protection involved a guy using a machete to steal a Toyota Tacoma, then running from law enforcement.
Carjacking victim gets run over by his own vehicle.
A man walked up to Tacoma in British Columbia near the border and used the machete to coerce the driver into handing the truck over. Then he took off, almost hitting a CBP officer. Of course, CBP started chasing the suspect. This incident went down at around 1:30 pm on December 12 at the Blaine border crossing between Washington and Canada.
The suspect drove south on Interstate 5, entering Bellingham as officers pursued and Washington State Police was alerted. Air units started tracking the pickup’s movements from above. As the chase become more dangerous from the suspect’s reckless maneuvers, troopers took over.
However, WSP’s attempts to use Stop Sticks didn’t net results during at least two tries. However, a PIT maneuver afterward spun the Toyota out and onto the soft shoulder. WSP, CBP, and Watcom County Sheriff’s Office all descended on the truck, arresting the suspect without incident.
They were able to recover the machete from the vehicle as well as positively identify the Tacoma as the one that was stolen in Canada.
Hopefully with all the evidence, crossing the border in a stolen vehicle, fleeing, etc. the suspect doesn’t just get a slap on the wrist. However, there’s no guarantee that won’t be the outcome between Washington and British Columbia, sadly.
At least the parts of the Tacoma shown in the photo shared by WSP look undamaged so the owner hopefully won’t be without the truck.
