NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A Texas resident infectious with measles traveled through Guadalupe and Valencia counties earlier this month, according to the New Mexico Department of Health. The public is now being advised they could have possibly been exposed to measles if they were in these locations during the listed timeframes:
-
Saturday, March 8 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the TA Travel Center on 2634 U.S. Route 66 in Santa Rosa
-
Saturday and Sunday, March 8 to 9 at the Days Inn by Wyndham on 1919 Main St. SW in Los Lunas
-
Sunday, March 9, from noon to 3:30 p.m. at Sopa’s Restaurant at 1700 Bosque Farms Boulevard in Bosque Farms
-
Monday, March 10, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 3674 NM-47 in Peralta
The health department says if you visited these places during those specified timeframes, and you are unvaccinated or unsure of your status, you should check on your vaccination records and get caught up on any missing doses.
Measles symptoms can start with a cough, runny nose, and eye redness, then progress to fever and rash that starts on the head before spreading down the body.
Anyone who develops symptoms is asked to isolate and call their healthcare provider for testing. The health department helpline can also be reached at 833-796-8773
“Recent measles cases in Texas and New Mexico are a reminder to stay vigilant,” said NMDOH Chief Medical Officer Dr. Miranda Durham. “When someone with measles travels, the virus can spread to unprotected communities—particularly during high-travel periods like spring break. Vaccination is our strongest defense: one dose of vaccine is 93% effective, and two doses are 97% effective.”
