There’s a live-action television series set in the Pacific Rim universe heading to Prime Video.
Variety broke the news today that Legendary, the studio behind the franchise, has struck a deal with Amazon MGM Studios. The project is now in development, with Eric Heisserer still on board as writer and executive producer.
Heisserer’s previous credits include penning the script for Arrival, which was based on a story by Ted Chiang, and serving as showrunner for the adaptation of the Leigh Bardugo series Shadow and Bone. This project is the first for his company, Chronology, that falls under the first-look TV deal it has with Legendary.
Plot details for the Pacific Rim series are under wraps, though Variety reports that it will be a prequel to the films. The first movie in the franchise, of course, is Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, which came out in 2013 and starred Charlie Hunnam (pictured above) as a guy in a mecha suit who controls a metal monster that battles the kaiju who come out of the Pacific ocean and pummel humanity.
Since del Toro’s film, there has been one sequel feature in 2018 and a two-season anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black, that ran on Netflix.
No news yet on when we’ll see this prequel live-action series on Prime Video, but Variety also reports that there might be some new movies in the pipeline as well, bringing even more kaiju into our lives.
