Multnomah Count Animal Services announces pet adoption sale as kennels reach capacity

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Multnomah County Animal Services announced that it is holding a summer adoption sale as its kennels are at capacity.

Multnomah County spokesperson Alicia Mendez told KOIN 6 News that Animal Services currently has the ability to fill five more dog kennels and 14 more cat kennels. However, workers have already started converting office spaces into kennels to make room for all the animals.

“Technically, [Animal Services] has already reached capacity,” Mendez said. “Pets are currently in offices, hallways, and are in our flex space areas. We are actively seeking creative solutions to ensure positive outcomes for all animals in our care, but we urgently need the community’s support.”

As of Friday, Animal Services has 65 pets available for adoption, including 33 dogs and a variety of rabbits, puppies, kittens and cats.

The Animal Services shelter, located at 1700 Historic Columbia River Highway in Troutdale, is offering a “Sun’s Out, Tongues Out” adoption special through the end of June to help with the overcrowding. During the adoption sale, the county is charging $25 for dogs and puppies, $15 for cats and kittens and $5 for rabbits and “pocket pets” like guinea pigs, hamsters and rodents.

“We ask that community members consider adoption or fostering a pet at this time,” Mendez said. “Additionally, we are asking members of the public to call [Animal Services] before bringing in any stray animals. If possible, we request that community members temporarily hold stray pets until kennel space becomes available. We are happy to provide food and supplies to those willing to assist in this way. We thank the community for their understanding and cooperation during this challenging time.”
