It won’t take long for the new year to usher in the first snowstorm.
Much of central Iowa, including the Des Moines metro, is forecasted to receive 2-4 inches of snow Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.
The local office on Wednesday issued a winter weather advisory that will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday that includes Des Moines, Ames, Carlisle, Indianola, Marshalltown, Newton and Norwalk.
The advisory includes Adel, Boone, Perry, Waukee and Winterset from 3 a.m. to noon.

2025’s first snowstorm will impact most of Iowa
A band of snow will develop across much of the state, west to east on Thursday morning, with most of the heavy snow falling between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. in the Des Moines metro. The storm is expected to span as far north as Storm Lake and as far south as Lamoni.
Drivers were warned to brace for slippery road conditions during Thursday’s morning commute.

The National Weather Service encouraged commuters to plan for slower traffic as falling snow may quickly cover roads and reduce visibility.
Several cities in the metro, including Johnston, Waukee and West Des Moines activated their snow ordinances on Wednesday, which places restrictions on street parking.
