Dan Campbell: You cross your fingers nobody gets hurt, we were fortunate

Lions head coach Dan Campbell knew heading into Monday night’s game against the 49ers that it was effectively meaningless to his team’s ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl: Win or lose in San Francisco, the No. 1 seed in the NFC will come down to Sunday night against Minnesota. So why did Campbell risk injuries to his most important players?

Campbell said he just thought playing to win was the right thing to do, and he felt that his team came out of it unscathed.

“I just don’t believe it’s fair to put in a guy who’s not prepared to play. And then you can only sit six guys, so who are those six? And the other guys that don’t, is it fair to them that we’re not using everything we got?” Campbell said. “You cross your fingers nobody gets hurt, and we were fortunate.”

Campbell acknowledged that he was thinking about whether he should sit some players out, right up until pregame, but ultimately said he prepared his team all week to win and that’s what he wanted to give his team the chance to do.

“I thought a lot about it,” Campbell said. “I ended up settling on the right thing to do is play these guys, because we owed it to the team.”

And now the Lions will focus on what matters: Beating the Vikings on Sunday night.
