::EU scientists warn 2024

is set to be the world’s hottest year

:: Carlo Buontempo, Director, Copernicus Climate Change Service

“In all likelihood, 2024 will be the new record-breaking year. Not only that, but it’s very likely — well virtually certain now — that it will exceed the 1.5C threshold, for the first time.”

“So last year, we kept the temperature below 1.5C just by a small margin. We were 1.48C. We have been above that threshold throughout the year. So in order to keep it below 1.5C we would really need to see two impossible months of basically zero anomaly, so we do expect the temperature to shift above 1.5C significantly. So more than a tenth of a degree.”

“We are bound to see more and more excedances at the annual level. So this is the first, it won’t be the last. Every single year, it will become more likely for the temperature to pass the 1.5 threshold and eventually in five or ten years time, basically every year will be above 1.5C.”

As envoys gathered in Bonn in early June to prepare for this year’s annual climate talks in November in Dubai, average global surface air temperatures were more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels for several days, the EU-funded Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said.

Copernicus Climate Change Service Director Carlo Buontempo said, “Every single year, it will become more likely for the temperature to pass the 1.5 threshold and eventually in five or ten years time, basically every year will be above 1.5C.”
