Kickstarter Update

Transparency and accountability.

From January 11th – March 12th 2018, the Modernist Podcast ran a Kickstarter funding drive, raising money to help us cover essential costs, as well as hire an intern. These costs will allow us to keep producing the podcast freely for the next two years, bringing modernist culture to a mass audience, and aiding international critical dialogue.

Our initial funding goal was £150. We are delighted to say, we exceeded all targets, raising £413 over just 60 days. Due to this, we have been able to hire two interns, Naomi Baguley and Jon Petre. In the interest of transparency, this post outlines what we will be doing with the money.

Firstly, it is important to note that Kickstarter levies a fee for its services. Due to this, we received £374.14 in funding. As outlined, we will be using some of the money to continue hosting the WordPress site. Alongside this, we have hired two student interns. Finally, we will be professionalising our branding by working with an outside illustrator, who will produce merchandising and logos for the podcast. We hope that by selling merchandise we will be able to independently raise money, which will help mitigate any other costs attributed to the podcast and, if enough is made, run our internship scheme again next year. We will be keeping some money back for intern expenses (train tickets, subsistence etc), should these arise. If they do not, the money will be channelled elsewhere, and a further update made. As such, of our money will be distributed as follows:

  • WordPress Hosting. £30/Year. 2 Years. £60.
  • Social Media Intern. £9/Hour, 2 Hours a Week, 6 weeks. £108.
  • Research Intern. £9/Hour, 2 Hours a Week, 3 Weeks. £54.
  • Merchandising and Branding: £70.
  • Intern Expenses: £80.

Total: £372

As part of our Kickstarter campaign, our backers received a website thank you, which can be found here. As well as this, our backers received an on-air thank you. This was included at the beginning of Episode 13, which can be found here. One backer pledged enough to help us choose a theme of an upcoming episode. Discussions are being held with said backer, and the episode will air in 2019.
